Lakewood seniors score in final home game

LAKEWOOD — Five different players scored, including all three graduating seniors, as the Lakewood girls soccer team played their final home game of the season against Coupeville.

The Cougars won the Oct. 21 game 6-0.

Lakewood sophomore Jessica Pouley scored what amounted to the game-winning goal in the eighth minute.

Senior captain Anna Work added the team’s second goal. Lakewood coach Vaughn Vandelac said after the game that he was pleased to see his seniors each score once on Senior Night.

“Korie Harrison came off the bench and got a goal, and Kelsey Gann moved up and she got a goal. You couldn’t have scripted it better,” he said.

Sophomore midfielder Maddie Chamberlin gave the team its third and fourth goals on either side of halftime.

While the girls still faced games against Sultan and Cedarcrest, their prospects of a district playoff appearance were already over. Vandelac said he hopes to see the team learn what they can from the remaining games and get ready for next year. Lakewood graduates only Work, Harrison and Gann. Two juniors, six sophomores and five freshmen will return next season to build on the skills they acquired this year.

“We were competitive and that’s what I was looking for,” Vandelac said. For the young team that lacks the size to play a really physical game, that has meant learning to pass with greater accuracy and move quickly to the ball. The goal, he said, has been “just to build off of what we did this year and add to it next year, come back a little bit stronger.”
