3 Eagles sign to play baseball in college

ARLINGTON – Three Arlington High School baseball players signed letters of intent to play in college Wednesday.

Jack Sheward will go to Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho. Last year he hit .384 and stole 16 of 18 bases. In his career as a pitcher, he has thrown 26 innings and has an earned run average of 1.05.

Sheward said the L-C coaches asked him to try to hit to all fields this year. He said he tends to pull the ball instead of hitting it where it’s pitched. When he’s catching, the coaches want him to work on calling a better game for his pitchers by exploiting batters’ weaknesses.

Camdon Anderson, who also catches, will play for Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon. He hit .241 last year so he wants to improve on that, also by hitting to all fields. He has had success as a pitcher for the Eagles, with a 3-0 record in 11.2 innings and a 1.80 e.r.a. He said the Cardinals started recruiting him in July and gave him a full ride for two years.

Cameron Smith will be pitching for Yakima Community College. He said it’s been a goal to pitch in college since he was in Little League.

He said YCC started recruiting him during the middle of the season last year. The school asked him to work on increasing his velocity. He said last year he was able to improve his fastball in miles per hour from the upper 70s to the mid-80s.

Coach Scott Striegel said it’s the third year in a row that three of his players have signed to play in college. He said that success allows scouts to see other players on his team who may not have been noticed before.
