Lakewood football facing uphill battle for postseason berth
The Lakewood Cougars have a little bit steeper hill to climb if they want to reach the 2A playoffs this year.
The Cougars lost 48-6 Friday, Oct. 13, to Cascade Conference foe Cedarcrest.
Ernest Mitchell scored the lone touchdown for Lakewood on a 4-yard run that capped off an 80-yard drive with approximately four minutes remaining in the contest.
Lakewood dropped to 0-5 in league play and 0-7 overall while the host Red Wolves improved to 3-2-0, 4-2-1.
Mitchell, a 5-foot-9 inch junior, ended the night with 18 carries for 129 yards.
Senior Danny Borisov had three carries for 34 yards before leaving the game with a shoulder injury.
First-year coach Dan Teeter said they are unsure if and when Borisov may be able to rejoin the team.
By the end of the game we were pretty banged up, Teeter said. We lost Danny to a shoulder injury. Thats the main reason we attempted a two-point conversion- because we were missing a bunch of guys to injuries.
The Cougars and Red Wolves were scoreless until close to the end of the first quarter.
Lakewoods first offensive series took them down to the Cedarcrest 7-yard line, but the visitors were unable to light up the scoreboard on a fourth down attempt.
Teeter said he reiterated the importance of spending time in the weight room to his squad.
The big deal is that we need to get in the weight room. Our average attendance last summer was about six kids and we are kind of reaping what we are sewing. I told them that if they dont want this (losing) to continue, they need to change their off-season habits.
Lakewood returns home Friday, Oct. 20, for a league Homecoming battle against Coupeville. Game time is 7 p.m.
