The Lakewood boys basketball team endured a tough week, suffering injuries to a couple of players and losing close games to conference rivals Granite Falls and Archbishop Murphy.
Terrence Ordonez went down with an ankle injury Jan. 8 against Granite Falls that will sideline the senior guard for two weeks, while forward Michael Mauer is out with a shoulder injury. Adding to the indignity, the 68-61 loss to Granite Falls and 55-48 loss to Archbishop Murphy dropped the Cougars to 1-4 in conference, where they are tied with Sultan.
Lakewood played ably in both games however. Despite putting up double digits in every quarter, Lakewood struggled to overcome a 20-10 deficit at the beginning of the second quarter. Three players scored in double digits, led by Billy Rists 16.
Blair Diamond had 11 points against Granite Falls and 12 three nights later in the loss to Archbishop Murphy. Senior Max Dragitch matched Diamond with 12 points of his own, and the Wildcats and Cougars traded the lead multiple times, with Murphy leading by one at the half and Lakewood up by seven entering the final quarter. The Wildcats held Lakewood to five points in the final eight minutes though, for the win. Lakewood travelled to 2-4 Coupeville after The Globe went to press.
