Arlington shocks M-P on senior night

MARYSVILLE Arlington threw a wrench in M-P's postseason plans, defeating the Tomahawks 1-0 on their senior night and throwing their quest for a league title into doubt.
M-P had several opportunities to score in the April 29 game, but it was Arlington's senior forward Schyler Furrer who found the goal with nine minutes left in the game.
The win was Arlington's second consecutive marquee win, after defeating Monroe 3-2 April 25. With their third loss of the season, M-P fell to second place in the league behind a two-loss, one-tie Snohomish team that held on to beat Lake Stevens in overtime the same night. The Tomahawks' hopes for a league title rested with Monroe, who visited Snohomish May 1, the same night M-P closed out its season at Oak Harbor.
The Tomahawks' best opportunity to score came near the end of the first half, when a penalty against Arlington midfielder Robert O'Day set up an M-P penalty kick.
While the M-P players and coaches were understandably disappointed by the outcome of the game, head coach Geoff Kittle chalked it up as a lesson better learned in the regular season than the playoffs.
"Hopefully the guys will learn from it, not to let a team like that hang in there," he said after the game. "We didn't take care of business early in the game."
