LACEY — The Tomahawks' football team is set to host Eastside Catholic in the state championship tournament quarterfinals, on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Quil Ceda Stadium, after pulling out a 33-21 victory against Timberline on Nov. 10.
M-P's Austin Joyner scored the first two touchdowns of the night, first on an 11-yard run and then catching a 20-yard pass from quarterback Jake Luton, keeping the score at 14-0 going into the second quarter.
Tomahawk Kyle Nobach caught a 55-yard pass from Luton to score the third touchdown of the night, in the beginning of the second quarter, giving M-P a 20-point lead over the Blazers. The Tomahawks defense kept the Blazers scoreless in the first quarter and successfully stopped several scoring drives throughout the game.
"Kyle Nobach came up huge for us with three interceptions," said head coach Brandon Carson, who noted that Nobach's interception in the endzone sealed the Tommies' victory.
Timberline scored their first touchdown in the second quarter, when Malachi Jones caught a 34-yard pass from Chris MacNeil.
Joyner followed up the Blazers' score with a 73-yard run for a touchdown, and the Tommies led Timberline 26-7 at halftime.
"Austin Joyner another great night with over 200 yards and three touchdowns," said Carson. "Deion Stell had some great runs for us throughout the game."
One of those runs ended in a 42-yard touchdown for Stell, who put up the last score of the night to bring the Tomahawks to a 33-21 victory.
The Tomahawks will host Eastside Catholic on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Quil Ceda Stadium.
"We are getting ready to play a really good football team that is solid in all phases of the game," said Carson, who sees Eastside Catholic as a much stronger opponent than Timberline. "They don't seem to have any weaknesses."
This is the first time that Carson has coached the team to quarterfinals, and the fact that it's played in Marysville is a good thing.
"It's a huge advantage," he said.
