Some M’ville water may taste funny, but it’s safe to drink

MARYSVILLE – City officials issued an advisory Tuesday that says while drinking water for some in Marysville may have a foul taste or smell, there is no health issue, and it’s safe to drink.

A seasonal algae bloom in Lake Chaplain Reservoir – the drinking water source for much of Snohomish County, including most of Marysville – has resulted in a metallic taste and fishy odor detected in tap water by some people.

To counter the effects, Marysville public works is diluting water concentration with water from Spada Lake Reservoir to reduce customer impacts. They will monitor water quality daily until flavor returns to an acceptable level. The water would primarily be in the city’s water line system south of 108th Street NE, since areas farther north draw water from the Edward Springs Reservoir and several deep water wells.

Officials said the algae has occurred periodically in other Cascade foothills drinking water reservoirs.
