False reports about clowns no laughing matter

Owe the tears of a clown. So misunderstood. Loved by many, scared by some.

With Halloween coming up, the city is reminding people that being dressed in a clown costume is not a crime.

A news release says, “It is important to remember that standing on a corner dressed in a clown costume is NOT a crime.”

Actually, the city was responding to national activity making the rounds on social media regarding threats involving clowns.

The Marysville Police Department has not been able to verify any sightings of creepy clowns in this community.

The news release isn’t joking around, adding that, “If you actually observe a clown and feel threatened by or uneasy about the individual, please call 9-1-1 immediately and let officers investigate.”

The Marysville School District promises that it will be hard-nosed about false reports involving clowns.

It reminds the public that making a false report or a vague threat, even on social media, can lead to criminal charges and school discipline. The city’s School Resource Officers will work with school staff regarding such threats.

On the MSD website, a notice says: “Students who have received a threat should report this to their school resources officers and administrators. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority.”

MSD spokeswoman Emily Wicks added, “Be assured that the Marysville School District administration and Marysville police will continue to monitor this matter and provide updates as needed.”

The New York Times reportedly recently that false reports about clowns have led to a number of arrests in multiple states.
