Candidate filing begins May 14 for federal, state, local offices

SNOHOMISH COUNTY — Candidate filing for offices up for election in 2012 begins Monday, May 14, and continues through Friday, May 18. Candidates may file either through the Washington State Office of the Secretary of State for federal, statewide or state offices representing voters from multiple counties, or with their local county for local county offices or for state offices representing voters entirely within the county.

The Snohomish County Auditor's Office will offer both online and in-person filing this year. Candidates may file online through the Snohomish County website at www.snoco.org starting at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 14. Online filing will be available 24 hours a day until 4 p.m. on Friday, May 18. Candidates filing online will need a valid email address.

Candidates can file in-person at the Snohomish County Auditor's Office, located at 3000 Rockefeller Ave. on the first floor of the Administration West Building in Everett. Filings will be accepted during normal business hours from 9 a.m. on Monday, May 14, through 5 p.m. on Friday, May 18. Monday morning and Friday afternoon are projected to be the busiest times.

Offices up for election that affect Snohomish County voters include the U.S. President and Vice-President, a U.S. Senate seat and four U.S. Representative seats. One of the open U.S. Representative seats is to fill a one-month short-term for the vacant 1st Congressional District office. Also open are a number of state Senate and Representative positions, both state and local judicial positions and a public utilities commissioner position. The major political parties will also be electing precinct committee officers this year.

"This year there are many opportunities available for people to serve and represent Snohomish County citizens in Washington, D.C., the state legislature in Olympia or in local districts," Snohomish County Auditor Carolyn Weikel said.
