Election ballots due Tuesday

You never know what’s going to happen in an election – take Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton, for example. But some very close results are expected when general election ballots start being counted Tuesday.

Completed ballots must be placed in a drop box at 135 N. Washington Ave. in Arlington or at 1049 State Ave. in Marysville by 8 p.m. Nov. 7. If mailed, it needs to be postmarked by that date.

For Snohomish County Council, Republican Nate Nehring of Stanwood, who was appointed to the post nine months ago, is being challenged by Ray Miller of Marysville, a longtime local leader in the Democratic Party.

Four of the seven positions are up for grabs on the Marysville City Council. Two challengers are receiving a lot of support against two longtime council members: Mark James, who is running against Donna Wright, and Tom King, who is up against Jeff Seibert. Also, incumbents Jeff Vaughan and Michael Stevens are facing challengers Robert Weiss and Elijah Olsen.

Two challengers also are receiving plenty of support in Marysville School District races.

Ray Sheldon is trying to get Tulalip Tribe representation back on the school board, taking on longtime incumbent Chris Nation. And Vanessa Edwards, a critic of the way the district has handled Marysville Getchell High School, is challenging one-term incumbent Bruce Larson.

Arlington also has some interesting races for City Council and school board.

Newcomer Joshua Roundy is challenging longtime incumbent Chris Raezer, who has been inactive this campaign season, except for some political signs around town. Longtime Arlington resident Craig Christianson is taking on incumbent Jesica Stickles in the other race up for election.

Four strong candidates are running for two posts on the Arlington School Board. Incumbent Ursula Ghirardo is challenged by former teacher Judy Fay, while newcomers Lyanne Rolf and Marc Rosson are battling it out for an open board spot.

Also on the ballot are some state advisory measures. Some other local races are unopposed.

Other contested local races include:

•Tim Cavanaugh v. Randy Tendering, Hospital District 3 commissioner

•Ed Taft v. Steve Meyers, Fire District 21 commissioner

•Eric Nordstrom v. Ken Johnson, Fire District 21 commissioner

•David Sherman v. Buckley Evans, Fire District 15 commissioner
