ARLINGTON – Haiku poems, pictures of eagles and other works of nature art are being sought for the Arlington-Stillaguamish Eagle Festival Feb. 2, 2019.
Cash prizes are awarded from the Arlington Arts Council.
The Nature Haiku contest is open to Snohomish County residents. There are three ages groups. Entries must be received by midnight Jan. 28. Submit online at www.arlingtonwa.gov/haiku The eagle photography contest and nature art show is open to all ages and experience levels. Along with a $200 cash prize, the winning eagle photograph is printed on the Eagle Festival poster and displayed on the city’s website. Entry fee is $5 per photo.
Artists also are encouraged to submit art depicting nature for the art show. A People’s Choice winner will receive $200. Categories are nature photograph, nature painting, mixed media and two youth age categories. The fee is $5 per piece. The children’s entry fee is a donation to the food bank.

Volunteers sought
ARLINGTON – The Arlington Emergency Cold Weather Shelter is in need of volunteers and donations of supplies.
Supplies needed include food, socks, toiletries, clothing, blankets, pillow cases or money.
Volunteers chaperone sleeping guests. There are different shifts through the night. Volunteers are also needed to provide and serve a light evening meal and breakfast, and to clean up. For details call Pastor Deena Jones at 360-435-3259.
The all-volunteer group operates the shelter from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. when the forecast calls for temperatures to drop below 32 degrees. The location rotates between churches in Arlington. Call 360-403-4674 for site information.
Santa Run breaks record
ARLINGTON – The city’s annual Santa Run brought in a record-breaking 11,684 pounds of food and close-to-a-record $1,915 in donations to the Arlington Food Bank.
The Santa Run is a 29-year-old community tradition that runs for 10 nights in December to bring Santa and a bit of holiday cheer to the community. The Arlington Fire Department, with the help of hundreds of Santa’s elves, escorts Santa through the city on a decorated fire engine.
Scouts will take your live Christmas tree
ARLINGTON – As a community service project, Boy Scout Troop 29 will collect live Christmas trees in Arlington neighborhoods on Jan. 5.
If you received a flyer, please place your tree near the curb in front of your home by 9 a.m. that day. Trees must be free of all decorations, tinsel, and stands.
You can also drop off your tree beginning Jan. 1 until 2 p.m. Jan. 5 at the Legion Park parking lot, 114 N. Olympic Ave., in the designated area.
