GRANITE FALLS - Sheriff’s deputies and local law enforcement are looking for a burglary suspect today who fired a shot near deputies late Sunday night as they closed in on him.
About 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, a homeowner in the 21200 block of Menzel Lake Road near Granite Falls called 911 to report a burglary in which basic needs items, including blankets, shoes and food were taken from the home. Deputies searched a wooded area behind the house and found some of the stolen items. During their search someone, presumably the suspect, fired a shot at deputies. Deputies believe the suspect knew it was police since they had identified themselves in the wooded area.
A larger search began shortly after that involving several agencies and SWAT teams from the Sheriff’s Office, Everett Police and Marysville Police.
Monroe Police, Arlington Police and Granite Falls Police also are assisting in the search. In all, more than three dozen law enforcement officers and K9 have been involved in the search at some point.
The Sheriff’s Office helicopter – equipped with forward looking infrared system – also searched the area overnight but didn’t locate the suspect. A helicopter with the Office of Air and Marine has been searching the area today, too.
Officers plan to search the area until they find the suspect(s) or are fairly certain the suspect is no longer in the area surrounding Menzel Lake Road. Menzel Lake Road has been blocked off since Sunday night as a public safety measure and to allow law enforcement to search the area.
Police are reminding people to keep their homes and outbuildings locked at all times as well as their vehicles. Anyone with information about this case or anyone who spots suspicious activity in this area is asked to call 911.
