Marysville firefighters, Domino's offer free pizzas to those who change their smoke alarm batteries

MARYSVILLE — Marysville firefighters and Domino's Pizza hope to give area residents an extra incentive to change the batteries of their smoke alarms, when they change their clocks from daylight savings time Nov. 2.

Marysville firefighters will help Domino's Pizza deliver orders in the Marysville area the first three days of standard time, Nov. 2-4. Firefighters will visit one Domino's customer per night in their fire engines, between the hours of 4-8 p.m., and at each house they visit, they will test the smoke alarms, to see if the batteries have been changed and to ensure that the alarms are working. If all of the smoke alarms work, Domino's Pizza will provide the entire pizza order for free.

"Each day, an average of nearly three people die in home fires," said Kristen Thorstenson, public education specialist and public information officer for the Marysville Fire District. "Eighty percent of fire deaths involving children occur in homes with no working smoke alarms. We have certainly had too many fire fatalities in recent weeks here in the Pacific Northwest. By providing an early warning and critical extra seconds to escape, smoke alarms double a family's chances of getting out of a home fire alive, but only if they work."
