ARLINGTON Theyre a breed often overlooked, which is why Arlington resident Kristine Carter is hosting a benefit for Bichon dogs Aug. 25.
Bichons are curly-haired lapdogs that are occasionally mistaken for poodles, and Carters Northwest Regional Bichon Bash will raise funds for Small Paws Rescue Inc., the largest Bichon Frise rescue in the country.
Were already expecting 40-50 Bichons and their owners, from as far off as British Columbia and Colorado, Carter said. Because they dont shed, theyre perfect for people with allergies to own.
Carter explained that the event will be both charitable and educational, since its set to include informational workshops on dog nutrition, health and senior issues, in addition to raffles, a silent auction and a boutique.
Cassie Erickson, owner and operator of A Bark Above! in Marysville, will also be on hand to address doggy day care, dog obedience training, custom dog collars and homemade natural treats, as well as recent dog food recalls.
While Small Paws Rescue is based in Tulsa, Okla., Carter volunteers in a Small Paws Rescue chapter that covers Washington state, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and North and South Dakota.
Carter is concerned with Bichons because theyre especially dependent on human care.
More sturdy breeds might not need as much attention, Carter said. Being kept in puppy mill cages can be more emotionally damaging for Bichons. Even if theyre been raised in horrid conditions, though, they can still be fabulous pets. Theyre great with families and even at hospices.
Carter credited Small Paws with rescuing approximately 150 Bichons a month across the country, from shelters, puppy mills and owners who can no longer take care of them, due to a variety of circumstances.
The Northwest Regional Bichon Bash to benefit Small Paws Rescue Inc., takes place Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 25530 Mountain Drive in Arlington. You may contact Kristine Carter by phone at 425-344-7663, or via e-mail at CarterKL05@yahoo.com. The Web site for Small Paws Rescue is www.smallpawsrescue.org.
