Tenth 'Summer Jubilee' set for Aug. 10

MARYSVILLE "I personally believe it is the best day of the year in Marysville," said event coordinator Judi Johnston.

Johnston said Turning Point Church's Summer Jubilee started out as a school supply give away benefiting some 50 kids along with a potluck dinner put on by members of the congregation.

For the last two years, the Jubilee has attracted 10,000 people each year. The 14 churches now involved still give away school supplies, but they handed out 5,500 bags of school items last year.

The 2008 Jubilee will feature everything from a barbecue to live entertainment to raffles to inflatable carnival-type attractions for the youngsters.

"Everybody just comes together," Johnston said, referring to not only the cooperation between the 14 churches, but also sponsorships from dozens of local businesses as well as city police helping coach organizers on security for the event.

Among the dignitaries expected to attend are Mike Gregoire, husband of Gov. Christine Gregoire. State Superintendent of Schools, Terry Bergeson also is expected to appear.

Live entertainment comes from musical group Noon Day Sun, making their first appearance at Summer Jubilee. Returning to the event will be Predators of the Heart, which brings in exotic animals ranging from large snakes to crocodiles and vultures.

Besides the inflatables, youngsters can visit youth and video game tents. Youths still can pick up free school supplies, but also any student in up to grade 12 can receive a free back-to-school haircut.

As for food, visitors can enjoy the barbecue, but also partake of free hot dogs, cotton candy and sno-cones. Raffle prizes include a computer system, gym memberships and bicycles.
