December 16, 2012 · 11:56 AM
CLEARVIEW - The Snohomish County Multi-agency Response Team (SMART) has responded to the scene at the 16300 block of SR 9 to investigate a possible trooper-involved shooting. One suspect was taken into custody and is being treated at Harborview Medical Center. No troopers or officers were injured, according to Shari Ireton, Director of Communications, Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.
The incident began at approximately 6:30 a.m. when a blue Ford pick-up was seen driving recklessly northbound on I-5 and a Washington State Patrol trooper attempted to pull the driver over near the 128th St. exit. The driver did not pull over and continued driving northbound at speeds of up to 90 m.p.h. WSP deployed a spike strip near the 88th Street exit in Marysville, which it is believed to have damaged at least one of the vehicle's tires, according to Ireton. The driver continued traveling northbound on I-5 and exited the freeway at Smokey Point onto eastbound SR 531 and then turned onto to southbound SR 9. The vehicle then exited SR 9, turning left onto 164th St SE and pulled into a gas station parking lot. When troopers followed him into the parking lot, it is believed the driver attempted to assault them with his vehicle.
According to Ireton, a trooper fired on the driver, injuring him. The driver then exited his vehicle and was taken into custody at approximately 7 a.m.. The driver has non-life threatening injuries and his identity has not yet been released.
