Oh yes, the silver linning
Aug 28 2008, 4:29 PM Okay everybody, let's all chime in together in four-part harmony and sing the praises of our delightful spring weather. Hasn't it been just glorious, the weeks after blessed weeks of non-stop precipitation and perpetual overcast? Just when I think it is finally going to warm up an be nice we get another cold front blowing in, the daytime temps drop down to the low 40s and the nights border on freezing. Let me tell you, while this is hard on the plants, it is murder on the gardeners.

Oh, I know what you are thinking; have I already forgotten April 12, the one and only day of spring we have had this year? (Or should I say summer since it was in the 70s that day). Yes, April 12 was delightful but come on people; one day can't begin to compensate for this incessant barrage of cold weather. Enough is enough. I am so past ready for shorts and tee shirts that I can't even find the words to express my frustration.

Would somebody please turn on the sunshine?

Throw open the windows. Spring is here.
Aug 28 2008, 4:42 PM Change is in the air. In spite of the soggy weather activity is picking up at the Ebey Slough Boat Launch. Coatless children shiver at school bus stops, hoping the clouds will part. Truckers off-load racks of bedding plants and hanging baskets at Freddy's and Wal-Mart. Given the growth-rate of lawns, it's a good thing that skiing is on the wane because spring chores can claim all the outdoor time householders have to spare.

Banking blues
Aug 28 2008, 4:42 PM Since I have most of my money in Washington Mutual Bank, every time I see a WaMu headline in the newspapers, I read the article under it very carefully.

I do not like it when they say "shaky WaMu" and "the ailing thrift" and say stockholders are only getting a penny per share dividend as of the first quarter of this year, compared to 15 cents last Dec. 31 and 56 cents Sept. 30.

Mind you, I am not a shareholder. I am just a client who has had savings and checking accounts along with IRAs, etc, in WaMu for many years. I have always kept my business earnings and IRAs in one bank and other family income in another bank.
