More toy, food donations needed to help M’ville poor this holiday season

MARYSVILLE – Donations are down for this year’s Marysville Community Food Bank and Toy Store.

“Six hundred families are signed up for the Toy Store, which is higher than normal,” said Fire Marshal Tom Maloney, whose firefighters help in the annual drive.

Organizers are asking community members to help their neighbors in need by donating food, books, coats and unused toys. Just look for the red barrels at more than 90 participating locations where you shop or do business.

People can also drop off food (including turkeys and hams), stocking stuffers, cash cards, candy or wrapping materials at the Food Bank, 4150 88th St. NE (behind St. Mary’s Church), from 8 a.m. to noon daily (except Wednesday and Sunday) and Tuesday from 2-7 p.m.

Another convenient way you can give is by bringing an unwrapped gift – for newborn to 17 years old – to any Tree of Giving. Trees are located at Home Street Bank, Marshall’s, Marysville Parks, Culture and Recreation Department, any Marysville Fire District station and the Marysville Police Department also are taking donations.

More than 350 families and 1,200 children were served in 2014.

The Toy Store will be open Dec. 14-15, and Christmas Food Basket distribution will be Dec. 19-20 and 23.

“We’re still down in donations and in need of volunteers – for the toy store and food bank as a whole,” Maloney said.
