Special MLK event Monday

MARYSVILLE – A special MLK event will take place at the Opera House Jan. 21.

JJ Frank of the Marysville YMCA will be the keynote speaker at 5 p.m.

Participants will then watch the PG-13 movie “Selma,” about Martin Luther King’s historic 1965 voting rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, Ala.

Suggested donation is $5. For details call 360-363-8400.

State of Marysville, chamber Jan. 25

TULALIP – The State of the City and State of the Chamber addresses will take place at Tulalip-Resort Casino Jan. 25.

The event will be from 7:30-9 a.m. in the Canoes Cabaret Room, 10200 Quil Ceda Blvd.

Mayor Jon Nehring will present the State of the City, while Jesica Stickles will present the State of the Chamber.

The program is part of the monthly Business Before Hours Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce event.

Have coffee with Mayor Nehring

MARYSVILLE – Marysville residents and business people are invited to have coffee with Mayor Jon Nehring to talk informally about city programs and services Feb. 4 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 1049 State Ave.

MG Hi-Q team 2nd in first match

Marysville Getchell’s Hi-Q team started this season with a strong showing, placing second to defending champion Stanwood.

Stanwood scored 43 points, with the Chargers second with 31. Lake Stevens placed third with 21 points.

Hi-Q teams play three rounds of matches in January and February, and teams are seeded in the March playoffs based on their points scored.

Red Curtain lineup for 2019-2020; funds sought

MARYSVILLE – Red Curtain just announced its lineup of seven plays for its 10 season in 2019-2020.

In September, the play will be Steel Magnolias followed by Dark of the Moon in October and the musical the Best Christmas Pageant Ever in December.

Next January it will be A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center of New York City.

In March of 2020, it will be The Rememberer followed in April The Importance of Being Earnest. The final play of the season next May will be Once Upon a Mattress.

Meanwhile, contributions to the Great Giving Game total $13,500. Donations help make Red Curtain’s programming possible and help fund ongoing improvements to the space. Anyone who donates $100 is eligible for prizes from random drawings.

Strawberry Festival seeks junior royalty candidates

MARYSVILLE – The Marysville Strawberry Festival is now accepting Junior Royalty applications.

Any sixth-graders living within or attending the Marysville School District are eligible.

Applications and qualifications can be found on the festival website at www.maryfest.org.

Valentine’s Day event at Opera House

MARYSVILLE – The Marysville Opera House will host a Valentine’s Dinner and Dueling Pianos with Jeff and Rhiannon Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. VIP seating is $65 with doors opening at 6 p.m. General admission is $10 less with doors opening 15 minutes later. For tickets, go to marysvillewa.gov or go to the city’s parks office at 6915 Armar Road.

7 on 7 soccer league signups under way

MARYSVILLE – Marysville parks is offering its 7 on 7 Spring Soccer League for boys and girls ages 7-14. Practices start the week of April 8. Games kickoff the week of April 29. Volunteer coaches are always needed. Registration runs through Feb. 15. Fees are $75 per player.
