Major achievement in prizes helps Junior Achievement

MARYSVILLE – The Pajama Bowl fundraiser Tuesday was for Junior Achievement, but the raffle prizes are a major achievement.

That may be one reason why about 100 bowlers paid $160 each to participate.

Shane Warbus of the Tulalip Resort Casino said he hopes to bring in $40,000 overall to Junior Achievement through the event.

Junior Achievement is a nonprofit teaching organization that helps students in kindergarten through 12th grade learn about job readiness and being an entrepreneur. Heather Vaughn of JA said the group works with Marysville, Arlington and other Snohomish County school districts. Teachers request for JA to come in, and there are fun lessons for every grade level.

For example, at the youngest level the kids are taught the difference between a need and a want, Vaughn said.

In the second grade they open a donut shop and try to figure out ways to make more money. In the fifth grade, they set up Biz Town. In high school they are given a budget on which to live on. In another lesson students use string and a world map to show the different places products go.

To help fund the nonprofit, each year it has a fun bowling event.

“These are special prizes,” Vaughn said.

Indeed they are. Warbus was particularly impressed with a barbecue grill that has a device that will text you when the meat is done.

Others were:

•A Lombardi Trophy signed by Russell Wilson

•A Seahawks jersey, also signed by Russell Wilson

•A large-screen TV

•A large outdoor pool

•A paddleboard

•A bartending setup.
