M-P Students of the Month have big plans

MARYSVILLE – Katelynn Melohusky and Philip Howat, two seniors at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, are the April Girl and Boy of the Month, as chosen by the Marysville Kiwanis and Soroptimist clubs.

Katelynn was founder and president of the M-P Mock Trial Club that qualified for state in this only its second year. “It was a dream team. We knew what we were doing,” she said.

Katelynn said at state that participated in four trials in one day, and each one lasted hours. But she loved it.

“I thought about law,” as a career, she said, but is leaning toward getting a bachelor’s degree in computer science at the University of Washington.

Katelynn is the salutatorian this year with a 3.997 grade point average. She has earned some credits for college by taking advanced courses.

“I’m the crazy one with not enough time to sleep,” she said her friends say.

She also is captain of the school’s golf team. She said golf runs in her family as her brother is the head pro at Gleneagle in Arlington, and her dad got her playing at age 10. She works part-time at the Battle Creek course at Tulalip, but she admitted her first set of clubs were Barbie doll-type. She has volunteered at a Kids Camp at Battle Creek.

Katelynn is a black belt in taekwondo and is now an instructor. She attended Grove Elementary years ago and volunteers there, helping second- through fourth-graders. She also was recently named a Marysville Strawberry Festival princess, so she will be volunteering to represent the city at about 18 parades this summer.

Her other main activities are Winterguard and band. She is a flute section leader, part of M-P’s wind ensemble and also a drum major for the Marysville Marching Alliance.

Like Katelynn, Philip is very involved in band, playing trumpet and winning honors in jazz performances and also in marching band.

He also is busy athletically as part of the school’s swim team. He made the district finals in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke. He was also named honorary captain.

Philip received in 2017 the Marysville Rotary Community Service Award. He said that was mostly for his volunteer service at Camp Prov. But he also volunteers with the food bank, conservation corp nursery, helps at school sports events and tutors mostly community college students in science.

He was Spanish Student of the Year in 2016 and was on the National Honor Society that year, along with being part of the MP Way.

Along with all of his school activities, Philip also has had a job since he was a sophomore, working at Target, Bob’s Burgers and Brew, doing lawn work and now producing websites.

Along with his high school diploma, he is set to receive his Associates in Arts and Sciences degree from Everett Community College this spring. His high school and college g.p.a. are around 3.8. Family is very important to Philip as they have a tradition of eating dinners, playing games and working in the garden together.

Like Katelynn, he is driven.

“I don’t like to settle. I keep pushing,” he said.

Philip has his future all planned out. He plans to graduate from EvCC’s nursing program in winter of 2021 with a 4.0 grade point. He then plans to graduate from UW-Bothell with his BSN. Later, he plans to graduate from Gonzaga with honors and receive his Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. For a career, he wants to get hired in a trauma unit at a Level 1 hospital, such as Harborview.
