Lincolns help those in need during Stuff the Bus in Marysville

MARYSVILLE – It may not surprise you that the Lincoln family volunteered to help the Stuff the Bus campaign Tuesday.

The campaign is an effort by the Marysville School District to obtain school supplies for kids in need.

Reagan, 8, Kennedy, 6, and Wilson, 5, all named after presidents, solicited support along State Avenue, where school buses were parked on both sides of the road at Coastal and Grocery Outlet. Reagan wore a dinosaur head, while Kennedy and Wilson were dressed as crayons. Their mom, Jenny, waved a sign that said, simply, “Stuff the Bus.” (See photo at right).

Lincoln said they decided to help when they heard volunteers were needed.

“There are a lot of kids in Marysville who are in need,” she said, adding her kids go to the co-op at Marshall Elementary.

MSD communications director Emily Wicks, also dressed as a crayon, said 36 different items are needed for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. For a list, go to www.bit.ly/SchoolSuppliesDonation. The campaign goes until Aug. 10. There is an application form for those who want to get free supplies for their kids. With 47 percent of the district’s children receiving free or reduced lunches, there is a lot of need, Wicks agreed.

The Salvation Army is involved this year. The red kettles normally seen only at Christmas are out to encourage financial donations. That money will be spent on supplies that aren’t donated the other way.
