Stilly Senior Center garage sale fundraiser set for Aug. 17
SMOKEY POINT — After the burglaries it suffered this spring, the staff of the Stillaguamish Senior Center knew they needed to add a source of revenue to stay afloat.
"We looked at our budget, and especially after the burglaries of the Senior Center and its Thrift Store in April and May, we decided we needed another fundraiser," said Jo Olson, executive director of the Stillaguamish Senior Center, who counted the Center's Bingo, Thrift Store and annual Lifetime Achievement Breakfasts among its current fundraisers.
After Senior Center staff opted to stage their first garage sale fundraiser on site, they spent more than a month gathering items for the event, which is set for Saturday, Aug. 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"With the way the current economy is, it's always nice to keep the cash flow going, and we've got the facility to host this type of event," Olson said. "The community response has been great. Not only have we completely filled up one of those moving pods with donations, but we're also storing the overflow in the community room of the Center itself."
Olson noted that shoppers will find no shortage of furniture, including two china cabinets, four dining tables with chairs, and an assortment of coffee tables, file cabinets and recliners.
"We have so many collectibles, we can't even mention them all," Olson said. "We've got an antique Singer sewing machine, a set of golf clubs and a rototiller that has been serviced for this sale, as well as craft supplies, good china and a large telescope. If you need a kennel for your big dog, we have that too, sized 12 feet by 6 feet. Everything is priced to go, and we will entertain offers."
The garage sale will be accompanied by a bake sale and a hot dog sale, so those who stop by can eat and shop at the same time.
"And all the money made from the garage sale will pay for our programs and activities to serve seniors," Olson said. "We offer them everything from nutrition and other wellness programs to social events. I'll be handing out fliers during the garage sale, to let the community know all that the Senior Center does for them."
The Stillaguamish Senior Center is located at 18308 Smokey Point Blvd. in Arlington. For more information, call Olson at 360-653-4551.
