MARYSVILLE — American Legion Post 178 of Marysville conducted a flag disposal ceremony last summer in Arlington.

This year, Post 178 is bringing the ceremony closer to home and moving it to a more significant date.

The Pavilion in Jennings Park will host this year’s Legion Post’s flag disposal ceremony at 4 p.m. on Sept. 11, following the annual Post picnic.

“This will be a combination social picnic and ceremonial flag retirement, using the American Legion flag disposal procedures,” American Legion Post 178 Cmdr. Ken Cage said. “When our flags become frayed and tattered from their use as symbols of America, they should no longer be used. Such unserviceable flags should be disposed of with the respect and dignity befitting their status as symbols of this nation.”

Cage encouraged anyone with such a distressed flag to call him at 360-659-5808 to arrange for their proper disposal.

“Members of the American Legion proudly served our nation and flag, and they are proud to be able to give our flags their final rites with our love and respect for this nation and our flag,” Cage said.
